Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr

This is a rather sad book about post-World War II Japan. The main character is a girl who develops leukemia as a result of exposure to the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. She is 11. When she hears a myth that if a sick person were to make a thousand paper cranes, they would be healed, she sets out to do so, but after she has made a few hundred, she dies. This is a true story.
